Gautam Buddha Vihara: A Legacy of Dhamma and Community
A Humble Beginning
The story of Gautam Buddha Vihara is the story of a community’s faith, perseverance, and collective vision.
Established on 16 February 1984, Gautam Buddha Vihara emerged from the aspirations of the early Buddhist settlers of Diyun who sought to create a common place of worship and spiritual refuge for the growing Buddhist population.
The foundation of this sacred institution was laid through the dedication of distinguished community leaders including Late Avas Karan Chakma (Budobize), Late Suramani Karbari, Late Birendra Chakma (Neidangara), Late Dolapuna Chakma (Hokkanibap), Late Chigonya Chakma (Dobokkeybap), Shri Buddhalila Chakma, and many other respected elders.
Among them, Late Dolapuna Chakma served as the Vihara’s caretaker (Hiyong Taga) from its inception until his passing, dedicating his life to the preservation and development of the temple

Community-Led Construction
In 1979, the Buddha Vihara Construction Committee was formed under the leadership of:
• Shri Gogen Basar – President
• Shri Hriday Chakma – General Secretary
• Late Chigonya Chakma – Cashier
Their tireless efforts mobilized community support and donations, enabling the realization of the Vihara.
One of the most remarkable contributions came from Shri R. N. Haldipur, the then Lieutenant Governor of Arunachal Pradesh, who officially donated Rs. 80,000 towards the construction.
The Vihara was inaugurated by Shri Badan Chandra Samon (Singpho), Vice-President of the Miao Community Development Block, on 16 February 1984.
Generations of Service
The Vihara represents the contributions of multiple generations.
The first generation established the institution.
The second generation strengthened and sustained it through service, leadership, and community engagement.
Today, the third generation carries forward this responsibility through the Gautam Buddha Vihara Management Trust (GBVMT), committed to preserving this sacred heritage while developing modern facilities for future generations.
A Legacy Beyond Religion
Throughout its history, Gautam Buddha Vihara has been more than a temple.
It has served as:
• A center for Buddhist learning
• A venue for religious festivals and ceremonies
• A symbol of communal harmony
• A place of refuge and spiritual guidance
• A living repository of Chakma Buddhist heritage
As we rebuild the Vihara, we honor the sacrifices and contributions of all those whose vision made this sacred institution possible.

A powerful reminder of Anicca (impermanence) right here in Diyun. Witnessing the dismantling of the old Gautam Buddha Vihara as we prepare to build a new sanctuary for peace and meditation.
End of an era in Diyun. Witness the dismantling of the historic Gautam Buddha Vihara. While it’s bittersweet to see the old structure go, it paves the way for a beautiful new chapter for our community. Watch the transition.
